Queer Human Rights Education (QHRE) series

Queer Human Rights Education (QHRE) is an online dialogue aimed at educating the LGBTQIA+ community and the public in general about their constitutional rights as Nigerians. The dialogueis held on Twitter Space and features a panel discussion focused on helping Nigerians understand their rights and learn the laws that protect these rights as citizens of Nigeria. The discussion also highlights issues faced by marginalized minority groups, e.g Sexual and gender minorities, women, people with disabilities, religious minorities, etc. and show how these groups can be better supported within the context of the Nigerian constitution.

May 2023: Exploring Nigerian Constitutional Laws and Minority Rights. Our kickoff episodes explored the Constitution and what it means for sexual and gender minorities, women, people with disabilities. Listen here: May QHRE

June 2023: Resilient and Proud – empowering LGBTQI+ voices”. Being Pride Month, the theme was chosen to foster togetherness and camaraderie while also addressing the recent crackdown on LGBTQI+ communities across Africa. The speakers invited for the event were made up of people who are out and proud while working to create safe spaces for the LGBTQI+ community in Nigeria. They told their stories about living freely in Nigeria and shared ways in which other LGBTQI+ persons can also live theri truth despite living in nigeria.  The objective of this discussion was to help motivate the audience and make them feel less alone. July 2023: Technologically based violence – keeping LGBTQIA+ persons safe online. Exploring the issues of doxxing, online violence, and harassment faced by the LGBTQIA+ community. The discussion shed light on the proactive measures to be taken to safeguard personal privacy online. The speakers also highlighted the available legal frameworks for seeking justice against online crimes. Listen here Part 1 and Part 2

August 2023: Intimate Partner Violence – Support and Resources for LGBTQI+ Persons. Discussing all forms of violence perpetrated by a romantic partner. The speakers talked to the community about what Intimate Partner Violence is and the signs to look out for. People who attended the event were able to learn about the resources and active solutions available for people who feel they are experiencing IPV – ways they can seek help and justice. September 2023: How To Handle Situations involving State Actors”. The discussion will surround how LGBTQIA+ individuals can stay safe and beyond reproach when dealing with state actors. The audience was educated about steps to take when dealing with the police during an arrest, stop-and-search etc. They were also given tips about how to take care of their mental health during and after such situations. October 2023: Coming Out Queer. Let’s talk about it. LGBTQ+ persons shared their unique coming out stories. These personal narratives provided inspiration and insights into the diversity of experiences within the community. Listen here: October QHRE

November 2023: The month of November is International Trangender awareness month. We focused on celebrating everything about being trans. The trans community includes trans men, trans women and non-binary folks. Listen here:November QHRE
